Story Time...

After reading some well known fables, students wrote their own. hHe assignment was to write a story to young children with a moral or lesson from them to take away from it. Today we shared them with students in other classes at DATA. They were a hit!

Here is an example of one students first page.....

Well done kids!

The Hunger Games Share Out

Guess Who Saw the Hunger Games last night?!

Our very own NTC member, Courtney! Here is a short summary of her take on the movie. She can answer questions as well!

Hi!!! Courtney here, I’m going to tell you about an awesome movie I saw last night. Yeah, I mean last night. I went to the midnight premiere of The Hunger Games. I expected it to be crazy, but it wasn’t, it was actually really fun. Before the movie started we (we being my mom, brother, and friend) were waiting in line. There weren’t a lot of people but still, we had to wait. But the best part of the night was right before they started screening the movie, they gave out posters, people were shouting out numbers and when it all got quiet I shouted “A7” and the lady looked at me and said “A7”. My friend’s mom looked at me and said “I’m taking you to Vegas after the movie” and we laughed about that during the whole movie. I think the actual movie itself was more than I could imagine, it was awesome. But if you haven’t read the books, I suggest you read the books first then see the movie, it will explain a lot.

I really liked the movie, but there were some notes. In some of the violent parts, they camera gets shaky. I think that just really confused some of the people who didn’t know what was going on. But the violent parts aren’t that violent. But bring tissues, because you are sure to cry.

Have any questions? Ask me. I’m the one with the blue sweatshirt

Girls Volleyball!

Queen sang it best……….WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS!

NOT ONLY ONCE, BUT TWICE!

After 8 weeks of competition, 49 volleyball teams, 157 volleyball matches, and 391 games, 2 teams emerged as Oxnard Recreation Volleyball Champions………DeAnza 6th grade Gold and DeAnza Varsity.

DeAnza Gold defeated Fillmore 25-21, 27-25 to take the Division “B” championship.  Dating all the way back to 1994 DeAnza has never had a 6th grade team qualify for the Oxnard league playoffs.  That is until this year!

In the “A” division, the DeAnza Varsity team took the championship with a relatively easy 25-13, 25-13 victory over Santa Clara.  That is back to back championships for the DeAnza Varsity team.

6th Grade Gold – Jessica V., Cindy E., Delaina A., Tabitha l, Karina N. Kambria D., Karina I., Maria E., Joie G.

Varsity – Rebecca C., Joselin G., Daisy M., Dalila G., Natalia G., Merissa B., Caryssa C., Anahi G., Julia S., Angelica V.

Our Spooky Story

Students wrote this one together:
                               Our Spooky Story:
“The wind was a torrent of darkness among the gusty tree. The salt of the seas ambushes my face. The roar of the waves crashing in my ears and I feel like screaming. I was feeling very uncertain about my next move. Should Irun or hide or stay and see what is causing the bizarre visions.
Then, I feel a cold breath on my neck, and I slowly turn around. I see a horrid sight a woman with gray skin and a haunting look on her face. Never have I seen such pale skin with a big nose. Then she opened her mouth that was filled with two long, bloody, fangs and said “Go away, get away now, it’s not safe.” Then she turned around and hollered a painful shriek. Then she disappeared into the dark night. The only thing left behind was a small drop of blood glistening in the moonlight.
The next thing I knew someone with rough, wrinkly skin grabbed me and covered my mouth with a dirty cloth. I felt the adrenaline pumping through my veins, and I just let him drag me away. Then, less than a second later, his greasy hands grabbed me by the neck and threw me into a van. “What is going on?” I yell. “Be quiet and you won’t be too damaged,” the deep voice of the man said. Then he mumbled something to another person, a woman I think, and ran off deep into the dark woods.  All of a sudden, I felt the van jerk forward. I started panicking.  My mind was racing.  Thoughts and questions were jumbled around in my brain.  I wondered where the woman was taking me.  I didn’t know what to do.  If I screeched, no one would hear me, so there was no point.
I felt my life coming back to me, the good and the bad. Then the van door opened and I was guided to a place unknown because there was a blindfold over my face. When it was removed I was at my house greeted by my mom and friends. Then I saw my captures, and they really weren’t unknown, they were my friends. “Happy Halloween!” they all shouted.
“Is this payback for what I did to you last year?” I said with tears trickling down my cheeks. “Yup,” they all said in unison. “Then how did you do the ghost lady?” I asked. “What ghost lady?” They said confused.
To Be Continued….Maybe

A Poem About Reading By. C.

Read and Believe

Reading, Reading, Here and There, Reading, Reading Everywhere

Oh what do I owe the pleasure of entering my little world?

Well it has to do with learning

Learning new things every day

I learn big things, and small things, important, or not-so-much

I am always learning in the little reading place in my mind

In my mind I can create a world with everything I want

It’s a place where I can control, create, and have all to my own

Whether it’s defeating a knight or casting a spell, it’s all mine

Though you may have your own little world you may just be able to enter mine

Just for a second

But you have to know the secret code

The code has something to do with you

And who you are

So once you find what it is your welcome to visit me

But I have to fully trust you to let you visit

But at some point in your visitation in my little world

I will guide you to the making of your own little world

A world that you can control, create, and have all to yourself

But you have to believe in everything that crosses your path

Are you up for that?

Believing, Believing, Here and There, Believing, Believing Everywhere

Jog-A-Thon

DATA’s First Ever Jog-a-Thon

            By: Cheryl H.
DATA had their first ever Jog-a-Thon! Thanks to our DATA parents, we were successful. They sprayed water and started this whole Jog-a-Thon. If it wasn’t for them we wouldn’t have had it. There were 3 events for each circle. One event was jogging around in a circle. Another one was the limbo. The third one was the sack races. Other circles had hula-hoops instead of sack races. They also had music which pumped up our moods. At the end we received popsicles and memories. Kids are still bringing money for DATA to have special, fun events for the year.

Battle of the Books (FUN)

BATTLE OF THE BOOKS!!!!!!!!

                                                                       By Courtney C.

For all the reading machines out there come to the Library on Wednesday. Battle of the Books is where a group of people are assigned a group of books, read them and when the time comes compete with kids from different schools. When you come two times you start to get front of the lunch line pass so you can get to the meetings on time. Well I’m sure you probably want more details. But if you want it come to the Library. Or I could give just some of the information, maybe just a little. If you sign up you have to read eight books or six books if you do a book talk and pass the AR tests. But don’t worry we have time to read them, maybe even all of them. We have until February, so don’t get all nervous and panicky. Remember Wednesday, Library, Front of the Lunch Line Pass.
